Steel & Willow Pod

This is a project which was created over the winter of 2006/07, a collaboration of metal and willow between myself and Nicholas Ostroumoff.

It is 6ft in diameter, perfectly spherical, and has 3 holes of different sizes. Hung from a tree branch or a beam one can climb inside and gently swing or, depending on the strength of the support, fit as many bodies in as possible!

Nicholas designed and constructed the initial framework using a series of metal hoops welded together.

Then it was my turn to weave. I used unstripped willow, a variety called Black Maul which has a natural rustic green colour. The ends are finished to the outside to give a smooth inside.

Use it like a hammock and cocoon yourself in this willow ball for a unique willow experience...
